P.Guggenheim Museum - THE VORTICISTS

January 29 – May 15, 2011

The Vorticists: Rebel Artists in London and New York, 1914-18 is the first exhibition devoted to this London-based movement to be presented in Italy, and the first to attempt to recreate the three Vorticist exhibitions mounted during World War I that served to define the group’s radical aesthetic for an Anglo-American public. An abstracted figurative style, combining machine-age forms and the energetic imagery suggested by a vortex, Vorticism emerged in London at a moment when the staid English art scene had been jolted by the advent of French Cubism and Italian Futurism. Absorbing elements from both, but also defining themselves against these foreign idioms, Vorticism was a short-lived, but pivotal modernist movement that essentially spanned the years of World War I.
The show will feature approximately 100 works, comprising paintings, sculpture, works on paper, photography, and printed matter, by renowned artists such as Wyndham Lewis, Jacob Epstein, Edward Wadsworth and Henri Gaudier-Brzeska. The Peggy Guggenheim Collection will be the second of three venues for the show, following its presentation at the Nasher Museum of Art, Duke University, Durham, NC, (September 30, 2010–January 2, 2011) and before it travels to Tate Britain, London, UK (June 14–September 4, 2011).
The exhibition is co-organized by the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Durham, NC, USA, and Tate Britain.

The Sensa Feast-day

The roots of the Sensa Feast-day lie in the history of Venice.
The Doge of the Serenissima used this rite to demonstrate the Republic's dominion in the gulf. The doge and his entourage embarked on the Bucintoro. On reaching the mouth of San Nicolò port, the Doge threw a gold ring into the sea.
The symbolism of the mystic marriage to the sea is still evident and is certainly still valid today. The Mayor of Venice, civic dignitaries and religious and military representatives leave Saint Mark's Square and sail to the Port of S. Nicolò where the ritual ring throwing takes place.

52nd Palio of the Ancient Maritime Republics

A yearly boat race between the four Italian Maritime Republics that sailed the seas in medieval times is hosted, in turn, on the Mediterranean at Amalfi and Genoa, on the Arno in Pisa and on the lagoon in Venice, to commemorate the historical figures and memories of the four cities.
The spectacular event is preceded by a great historical pageant of 400 boaters with participants in period costumes: flags and festoons, trumpets and drums, horses and sedan-chairs add glamour to the solemn procession.

Redentore feast-day

It falls on the third Sunday in July and is a very Venetians’ treasured festivity,
ending with a spectacular firework display in the evening. The Redentore feast-day had it's origin in the 1500 last quarter, when the plague killed more than a third of the city’s inhabitants. In 1576 was announced the vow to erect a church dedicated to the Redentore (Redeemer), in return for help in ending the plague. On July 13, 1577, the plague was declared definitively over and it was decided that the city’s liberation from the terrible disease should be celebrated on the third Sunday in July with a solemn Church ceremony and a popular feast. At sunset the well illuminated boats, decorated with boughs and coloured balloons, begin congregating in Saint Mark’s Basin and the Giudecca Canal. In the boats people eat traditional food, waiting for the firework display, which begins at 11.30pm and lasts until after midnight.

The Historical Regatta

The historical regatta on Grand Canal.
A procession commemorates the welcome given to Caterina Cornaro, wife of the King of Cyprus, in 1489 after she renounced her throne in favour of Venice. It is a procession of 16th century style boats, with the famous Bucintoro, the boat representing the Serenissima, at its head.
Then comes the competition: many different types of boats take part in the Regata Storica: the "gondolino", the "caorlina", the "mascareta", the "pupparin", and, of course, the gondola, the Venetian boat par excellence.

Madonna della Salute Feast-day

The holiday is, like the Redentore, in memory of another bout of pestilence, which lasted for two years from 1630-31, and the subsequent vow by the Doge to obtain the intercession of the Virgin Mary.
Was erected a church called the Salute, consecrated in 1687.
On November 21, thousands of people cross the boats votive bridge and reach the majestic Salute Church to give thanks and ask the Virgin Mary to keep them in good health.
